The Newlyweds at St. Andrews UMC for Their First Sunday

Josh and Kate Dalton came to church the morning after they were married. Our benediction that morning was to have them come up to the front of the sanctuary for the entire congregation to gather around, place their hands on them, and pray that God would bless their marriage and life together.

When the "Amen" was said, we pulled out the bubble juice and blew bubbles, just like we did when they left the reception. Everyone was laughing and celebrating.

A wonderful way to start a life together, in God's house, with God's people, blowing bubbles, and laughing.

The Wedding of Joashua and Kate Dalton

Here comes the Bride! Joshua and Kate Dalton were married Saturday June 19th at Straightstone Baptist Church in Pittsylvania County. I co-officiated with Pastor Paul Woodward of Straightstone Baptist Church. He did the opening half of the service and I picked it up with the vows. The transition was during a special song.

It was a beautiful service and went off with barely a glitch. I was going to serve the couple Communion and then there was to be a song, and then they would do the Unity Sand. The singer started before we had a chance to begin the Communion. I looked at Kate and Josh and told them no problem. When the song was finished I served Communion, then they moved directly to do the Unity Sand. It went seamlessly.

Presenting Mr. & Mrs. Joshua and Kate Dalton.

A happy pastor and wife, to have been included in such a special day.

Lisa and A.J. Nuckols, the very happy parents of the Bride.

They blew bubbles instead of throwing rice. That way they could start inside the building and just follow Josh and Katie out the door.

Heading out! It looks like either the airbag went off or a jar of marshmallow fluff exploded. Happy couple, happy family and friends, a very good day.Thank you all for the privilege of being a part of it.

Josh and Katie's Wedding Rehearsal

Joanne and I got back from Williamsburg on Friday evening, just in time to change clothes, into something better than our traveling duds, and make it to the wedding rehearsal for Josh Dalton and Katie Nuckols.

I like rehearsals, mainly because everyone is a bit more relaxed and plays around.

The wedding will be at Straightstone Baptist Church and I will be co-officiating with their pastor, Paul Woodward.

The rehearsal went fine, but even when they're total chaos the wedding seems to come off beautiful. Personally, I think its another one of those God things. After the rehearsal we had diner in the church fellowship hall.

Tomorrow's a big day.

39th Wedding Anniversary

Joanne and I celebrated our 39th wedding anniversary on June the 11th. We got married just two days after Joanne had graduated High School. I, being so much older, had graduated the year before. We might have been young and dumb, but we were also stubborn in love.
Here we are with my parents. You may be noticing all the purple and lavender of the clothes. Apparently it was really "in" in 1971. And yes, those are purple crushed velvet trousers I'm wearing. We still have them stored, Joanne wants to make pillows out of the material. I'm thinking that I might lose these extra 60 pounds and fit back in them for our 40th anniversary. Please, stop laughing.
Here is Joanne with her parents and her sister, Cindy. Check out the gloves. We were married at Shiloh UMC, where Joanne had grown up.
Here we are with Joanne's Granny Lula and my Grampy Hamilton.
This is Joanne's Maid of Honor, Emily Keyes, and my Best Man, Doug Labiosa.

The Wedding of Travis and Anna Thacker

Jeremiah called and asked if I would do a wedding for his friends Anna and Travis. They wanted to get married on the Blue Ridge Parkway at an overlook called Thunder Ridge. It was also the location that he had proposed to her. It is a beautiful site, overlooking the valley and mountains below.
The weather could not have been better, It was in the low 80's with a ten mph breeze, just enough to keep the bugs away.
It was a simple, yet beautiful service. Travis held their 2 week old baby, Ember Rose, during the service, while Anna held a bouquet of Day Lilies.
Joanne took the pictures which wasn't an easy job. The balcony was four steps up and she was facing into the setting sun.
"You may kiss your bride" is one of my favorite things to say at a wedding.
"I would like to present to the world Anna and Travis Thacker"
...And Ember Rose.
One of the things I love about this is that I am allowed to partipate in personal moments that change people's lives.
Travis, Anna, and Ember Rose may God bless you will a long and happy life together.

Wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Zhu

On Saturday night Gordon Goh, who I worked with at the hospital for over 20 years, called and said he had a big favor to ask of me. Gordon attends the Chinese Church at Beulah Baptist Church. It seems that there was a couple, who also attend the Chinese Church, and they wanted to get married on Tuesday, three days away.

I agreed to officiate the wedding. I had no questions about the couples status, preparedness for marriage, or faith. I know Dr. and Mrs. Wu, who pastor and teach the Chinese Church. I also know that Dr. Wu was giving the bride in marriage and that he would never do that if they were not well prepared. It helps to know those in leadership and their standards. The bride's name was Suzanne and the groom was Frank.
On Sunday I got a call from the couple and was told that they were planning a rehearsal on Monday evening. They asked if I would be able to attend. Since I wasn't sure how you could have a rehearsal otherwise, I figured that I had better show up. I seems that the bride's name was HaiYing Sun and groom's name was ChangJiang Zhu. I needed to do some pronunciation practicing. Their selection of the day for the wedding was the anniversary of the day they met two years ago.

When Joanne and I got there on Monday, we found that they had decorated the sanctuary with a boat load of flowers. The entire isle that the bride would walk down was lined with flower rope. The platform had a flower draped arch and potted flower on the railing in front of the choir loft. All the decorations were impressive, since they had already told us that besides the Bride and Groom, and Joanne and me, they were expecting seven guests. They wanted a small wedding, but not an underdone wedding.
On Tuesday evening, the groom asked if we could start a bit late. I told him it was his wedding and we'd start when he was ready. Apparently, he had left something at home and had to run and get it. So we began at 7:30 rather than 7:00, not a big deal. Now, we had made a few planned modifications in the service. First was that they both had something they wanted to read to each other. Second was that when they lit the unity candle in place of music I would read a scripture. I also printed out their names and placed them on each page of the service, just so I could get them correct.
When the time came for them to read what they had prepared, it went great. They probably could have written their own service. When HaiYing was reading hers, she read 1 Corinthians 13, the Love chapter. That was the scripture that I had planned to read during their lighting of the unity candle. Fortunately I had prepared another scripture. So, I slipped one into the back of the book and the other into it's place.

The service went very well. Especially since we had emailed the parts that they would be saying to them the night before so they could practice the English pronunciations. I was told later that I did a good job on the names, I do hope so.

After the service ChangJiang and HaiYing, Mr. and Mrs. Zhu, told us that they had made dinner reservations at Golden Corral for everyone. Golden Corral is a buffet type restaurant, which was good since we could all get what we wanted. But, by the time we arrived at the restaurant it was 8:30 and they were scheduled to close at 9:00. The manager said not to worry, everything would remain available until we were finished. The man cooking the steaks stayed until we were done and the waiter was continually checking on us. I do not know very many restaurants that would have been so gracious. Kudos to Golden Corral on Wards Road in Lynchburg. If you get a chance to eat there, please, tell them thank you for what they did for the newlyweds.

ChangJiang and HaiYing Zhu, may your life together be richly blessed.
