The Miracle at Providence UMC

While I was the pastor for Providence UMC in Java, Virginia, we had a devastating thing happen. Our District Superintedent told me, "If this had happened to a normal church of 10 people, they would have locked the doors and walked away". But, this isn't a story about an ordinary church, this is an extraordinary church. The following account was written by one of the congregation at Providence UMC, Tammy Daniels. The pictures are from Donna Adams, Tammy Daniels, and me. Take the time to read it, remembering that it was a church of 8 members.

There once was a little white church in the country. One day it appeared that the little church was doomed. Then like a phoenix rising form the ashes it was saved. Not really! You see the foundation for this building had been established over 2000 years earlier on a hilltop outside of Jerusalem and no disaster can prevail against this structure.

Homecoming Sunday

The little church was originally built around 1890 in the Java community. For decades it was heated by a wood stove in the center of its single room. It had been built on an acre of land purchased for $12.00 and covered in trees. From these trees we believe the altar and pews were built. Also unfortunately one of the stumps from these trees was left to form the support in the center of the church. There were no amenities, no handicap accommodations, only a tree with a large raised foot standing near the door on which the older men could sit and the young children could play. And this tree provided the most wonderful acorns in the fall that all the children would collect for play. It seems the squirrels were also collecting these acorns and depositing them within the walls of the church for over a hundred years.

Eventually burgundy colored runners were donated to cover the aisles and altar. In the 1950’s and 1960’s a picnic table was purchased for the children to use for Sunday school class. This was when wagons were brought in each fall for food for the annual homecoming day service. And if rain threatened they had to ask the local funeral home to provide a tent. Everyone would place their plates on the hoods of cars or the tailgates of trucks to enjoy their food. And then outhouses were added to the back of the little white church. Oh what a luxury.

In the 1970’s the stove left the center of the building and a heating system was installed. In addition air-conditioning was also added. At the time the little one room church was the only one on the charge with air-conditioning. And to improve the efficiency of the heating system wall to wall carpet was put in place. It was during this time that one of the older members decided to donate a new piano and pulpit Bible to the church. In 1972 the first wedding in its history was held in the little white church. A picnic pavilion was eventually built and the need to call on the local funeral home for aid was deleted.

In the last 20 years the little church has undergone major changes. Cushions were provided for the pews which were handmade on the lot with a mold that has been preserved. Although beautiful the pews were not built with ergonomics in mind and the cushions provided much needed comfort. A CD player was purchased and the entire Methodist Hymnal on CD’s was donated because frequently there was no one available to play the piano for congregational singing.

A room was built in 2002 on the back of the church to house a restroom and provide storage. This included the digging of a well and installation of a septic tank. It now is home to a refrigerator and microwave as well as a small pantry. A storage shed was added along side the picnic shelter to hold the picnic tables and chairs. A handicap ramp was built to give access to the church through the new room. New doors and storm doors were added to the structure. Replacement windows were bought and hand made stained glass panels were fitted inside the structure. The outside was covered with new siding and the roof replaced. A donation was made of new altar furniture, communion service and vestments. During this time on at least 2 different occasions the picnic pavilion had to be repaired due to the damage caused by falling trees. Eventually many of trees that still covered the lot had to be removed to eliminate the danger they posed during storms. The parking lot has also been paved in the last 4 years and new carpet replaced the now faded first installment.

Two years ago the small congregation took a giant step and agreed to take out a loan for the first time in the history of the church to enclose the picnic pavilion. At Christmas 2009 the church held it first dinner in the hall. In the spring of 2010 a lifelong member passed away and the family requested donations in lieu of flower for the fellowship hall. Within 11 months the loans was repaid.

In the fall of 2010 sawdust was noticed under the pews and the floor seemed to give in places. The exterminators were called in and given the go ahead to take care of the problem. During February of 2011 a contractor was asked to check out the floor under the piano for damage and reinforce it if necessary. He found new damage and the exterminators were called back. It seemed the damage was not just from termites but from powder post beetles. Not only were the floors damaged but the pews were infiltrated. One of the main culprits was that stump on which the main floor joists rested.

This is the sight I found in the parking lot when I arrived at church on Sunday morning. The entire floor of the sanctuary had been pulled out, along with the pews, altar rail, communion table, and pulpit. The contractor said that the only thing that kept the piano from falling through the floor was the carpet underneath it. He was also surprised that I hadn't gone through the floor behind the pulpit.

The joists of the sanctuary floor were supported by piles stones and in several places by stumps that were there when the church was built over 120 years ago.

On February 24th an emergency meeting of church members was called. For a congregation of 8 members this was an extremely sobering time. Estimates were given and figures crunched. The repairs would decimate the church’s entire checking account.

We met in the Fellowship Hall while the restoration of the sanctary was in process. Someone knew that we would be needing a place to assemble, when the congregation was inspired to close in the picnic pavillion to make a fellowship hall.

Our District Superintendent, Rev. Larry Davies, dropped in on a Sunday Morning to see the damage and to assure us of the support of the Lynchburg District of the UMC.

The most senior member of the group said in very soft voice, “We have put too much into this building to let it fall down around us.” In less than 30 minutes time the meeting was held and the decision made. The Lord wanted his church repaired, and so it would be.

Things moved quickly. The contractor, who was on site for the meeting, was to start removing the rotten floor before sunup the next day. Church members immediately began transferring all that was needed for services to the fellowship hall. They met again on Saturday to complete those preparations.

Within in hours of this leap of faith the showers of blessings came in a deluge. The contractor came in that very first afternoon with the pledge of a donation of wood from a local lumber company. This wood would replace the damaged joists. The pastor put the news on his facebook account initiating help from outside of the community. One dear lady gave a donation and contacted a second lumber company. When the estimate for replacing the carpet was too high this second lumber company donated pine wood for the flooring. A sister church sent on offer to use their facilities as well as a check. Other churches at a greater distance reached out with large donations of money, pews and altar furniture.

People and churches that didn't know Providence UMC and couldn't have found the church with a GPS gave support, both in prayer and financial. It was such a powerful example of the Church being the Church. Nothing was asked in return, no one asked for a plaque recognizing their generosity or asked that something be named after them. For those of us at Providence UMC it was a sovereign move of God, a demonstration of His love for His Church.

The lumber that was donated had been part of an order that had been canceled and was sitting, waiting to be used. Someone knew that we would be in need of some lumber on short notice.

Timberlake UMC was going to convert their Chapel and needed to move out everything that was in it and we needed everything they had in it. Someone knew that we were going to need all new furniture to replace that which was lost. That worked out well didn't it?

It's a long ride, over some rough roads to Java Virginia, strap everything down tight!

Getting it to Providence UMC was only part of the problem, we still had to get everything in the door of the church.

The blessings were so tremendous that when the news came next that the wainscoting was too damaged to remain in the building, not an eye blinked. The consensus was “fix it too.” Other individuals sent donations.

New sconces were donated. Fortuitously, they required new wiring causing the discovery of faulty wiring which was repaired.

Labor costs have been offset by donations of time, money. Several young men interested in doing community service have come in on the weekends to give the contractor a helping hand. One of the members paid an extra worker for a week in order to help speed the repairs.

The latest announcement on this endeavor is good news. Just barely over a month from the discovery of “devastation under the carpet” services will be moved from the fellowship hall into the remodeled sanctuary.

In addition to the work being done inside the church the congregation’s project for the spring had been to create a prayer or meditation garden. This project too has been making progress with the members collecting large rocks from local farms and hauling them into the site. The flowering trees and shrubs are also in place and it is the hope of the small group that everything will be completed simultaneously.

The little white church in the country stills intends to open its doors on the second Sunday in September 2011 to welcome back the family it has not seen in a year for homecoming. The interior will be much different and probably much healthier, but the faith that originally placed the church on that ground will not have waivered. The little congregation is both humbled and grateful by all the generosity extended to them and the little church will continue to broadcast the news” Our God is An Awesome God!”

We met back in our restored sanctuary on the first Sunday in April 2011.

Joanne and I had not been allowed to see the finished work until the first Sunday service in the sanctuary. The members of the congregations had all made guesses on what Joanne and I would say when we walked in a saw it all finished for the first time. We both, at the same time, made a wise and very intelligent declaration, "WOW!!"

We referred to the new pulpit as the"Nose Bleed Pulpit". The old platform had one step up and the pulpit sat on and you stood on the platform. The new platform had two steps and then you had two steps up into the pulpit.

First Sunday at Timberlake East UMC

This is my first Sunday at Timberlake UMC East, the satellite church of Timberlake UMC. It is a small congregation, that has been through some rough seas lately. Joanne and I are hoping to be a blessing the the folks here. The picture of Jesus behind the altar was like a welcome home for me. We had the same picture in our home when I was a kid and it was also at Shiloh UMC where Joanne and I got married.

Everyone was very kind and receptive to us. I'm sure it will take time for them to get accustomed to the bearded guy with the Disney ties.

We were really happy to have Courtney, Dave, and the four grandchildren with us for our first day. Levi and Lila enjoyed playing with stuffed toys they have in the pews.

Taisie and Thomas were just overjoyed to be there with us, really!! When I got back in the pulpit the next Sunday, there was a note there. It said, "The pastor at this church is really awesome. I know because he's my Daddy." Thats the way to start out at a new appontment.

Last Sunday Lunch at St Andrews UMC

Our last Sunday serving the Mount Airy Charge, St. Andrews UMC gave us a Going Away lunch. If you have been reading this blog for long you'll have noticed that at these three churches we eat well and often. That I didn't leave weighing well over 300 pounds was definitely not due to my will power.

The drive back to Lynchburg from the three churches in Pittsylvania and Halifax Counties that last Sunday was the longest drive home in 4 years. This appointment had been perfect for Joanne and me, we are forver indebted to all 3 churches for the blessing they have been to us. Thank you Republican Grove UMC, Providence UMC, and St. Andrews UMC.

One thing you could always say about the 3 churches on the mount Airy Charge was that they knew how to eat well. Before our last Sunday, Providence UMC had a Going Away luncheon for us.

There was enough food to feed a church very much larger and no one ever leaves hungry.

The BBQ was excellent, to be truthful everything was and trust me I tried most of it, knowing I wouldn't get it any more for at least a year, until Homecoming Sunday 2012.

Now, I want you to notice something, Do you see the two pies and two cakes? That's almost a half a cake or pie per person. They have come to know my weak spots so well.

Welcome to the Family

Two years ago this January, our dog Millie died. Since then I haven't really considered getting a new dog. Milie had been a member of our family for 13 years and it was to hard to think about having another dog.

In November, a friend from High School had a picture on Facebook of a dog posted by the ASPCA in Bedford. When I clicked on the picture, a collection of pictures of a lot of dogs came up. The ASPCA had gone to the Bedford Animal Shelter and taken pictures of all the dogs there, in the hopes that someone would adopt. As I was going through the photos I spotted 2 dachshunds in a pen. I didn't think or hesitate, I called right away and I kept calling for 5 days, until I got an answer. When I finally got through, I was told that the female had already been adopted, but the male was still available. I told them that I would be there the next morning.

When they brought Tiger out, he wouldn't even look at me. If I tried to reach out to touch him, he drew away, hiding behind the leg of the girl who brought him out. They suggested that I take him out for a little walk. Even then he wanted very little to do with me and contined to draw away. Things were not going well for the relationship. But when I went back inside and they asked me what I thought, I said, "I think we're going home now".

It took us a couple of days to connect, but we finally did. For Joanne it took a few more days. I had to leave for a weekend class and while I was gone, Tiger was not very receptive. Actually, according to Joanne, he would go to the other end of the sofa and curl up with his back to her, ignoring her. But that night they bonded when he curled up next to Joanne in bed under the covers and slept.

In December we got a call from the family that had adopted the other dachshund. They were not siblings, not from the same litter, but they were a bonded pair. They asked if we were still interested in having them both. Again, without hesitation, my answer was "Yes!". When we went to pick her up, we were surprised to find that she was half his size. Tiger was 12 pounds, while Princess was a diminutive 7 pounds. (Our vet thinks that she'll stay about that size.) We were told that she was very sedate, all she did was lay around sleeping and want to be cuddled and that was exactly what she did all the way home in Joanne's lap.

When we got Princess home, we brought her in the house and brought out Tiger. They looked at each other and went nose to nose. After a few more strategically placed sniffs all pandemonium broke out. They were jumping all over each other and chasing each other all around the house. She hadn't been sedate, she was depressed. When we took them both out on the leash, they walked side by side, when Tiger turned Princess turned right along with him. Once they got back inside, they both curled up in the armchair and went to sleep. Together again, all is right with the world.

We have had a few people who have questioned our sanity at acquiring two dogs. But, its been about a month now and I can't imagine not having them both. They still romp and chase each other. They have this wrestle/fighting they do, biting each other, chewing on each others legs and ears, all the while growling ferociously with teeth bared. Every once in awhile Princess will yelp because Tiger hurt her, kind of big brother-little sister rough play. At first we thought that Tiger was picking on Princess. When we watched more closely, she is the instigator most of the time and when she yelps he'll stop, but she prods him to start up again.

Joanne had mentioned that she was thinking about getting me a dog for Christmas. We decided that we weren't really ready for another dog. Then a friend posts a random picture of an ASPCA dog and I find Tiger and Princess. We get one and then the other. I got my Christmas present(s).

A Moving Experience

Back In July, I was appointed to a new church, ending my four glorious years with the Mount Airy Charge. It came as a surprise, since I was first told that I was staying there in May. A few weeks after I was told I was staying, I was informed that a move might be in the works and that I should be prepared. Then about another week later, I was told that the move would not be happening and I should relax. Well, I was relaxing one evening and about 9:30 the phone rang. The caller ID said it was my District Superintedent (just so you know, a call from the DS late in the evening is not a good sign). I was told that it was official that as of July 1st I would be with a new church.

I do have to thank the DS, because he actually came to the churches and broke the news. You couldn't pay me to do that part of the job. It wasn't pretty, but he did his best to reassure them that they weren't being pushed aside for the needs of some bigger church. You see, I was being apponted to a large church, Timberlake UMC, http://www.timberlakeumc.org/ , as an Associate Pastor, but my primary duty was to be the care of their small satellite church, Timberlake UMC East.

Four years ago, before being appointed to the Mount Airy Charge, I served as the visitation pastor at Timberlake UMC. So, it is a going home of sorts, but there are more mixed emotions in all this I can express. But, as I told the folks at the three churches I was leaving, this is why we pray every Sunday for those who are in positions of authority in our lives; government, jobs, and church. So that when a decision is made that we may not be happy or comfortable with, we can relax because we have already take it to God and placed it in God's capable hands.

Timberlake UMC East had gone through some trauma. Their previous pstor resigned as pastor of the church and as a pastor of the United Methodist Church. When he left and started his own independent, non-denominatioal church a large number of the the congregation went with him. They have had a number of people filling in for preaching on Sunday for several months before I arrived. That is where I an now.

I tell you all this to hopefully help with the transition and any confusion with the blog. I still have things to post from the Mount Airy Charge and I will be starting to post some things from Timberlake UMC and Timberlake UMC East. I'll try to be clear, but you know how good I am at that. Of course, there will still be family and Disney stuff, too.

Virginia UMC Annual Conference

We had a great time at the Virginia United Methodist Annual Conference in Roanoke in June of this year.

The Lynchburg District met at a local eatery for lunch and we just about took up every seat in the place.

As we usually do, Joanne and I hooked up with George Schaeffer and his wife Kathy.

I had the job at the Conference of being a "Teller", sounds important doesn't it? It could be better described as a "runner". I went to pick up blank ballots, at the far end of the civic center, bring them back to the nose bleed seats section that I had been assigned, then collect them, and return then to the far end so that they could be counted.

Please understad, running is not something I enjoy. My theory about running is that you do it if someone is chasing you with a knife or a big stick. If they have a gun, don't bother, you can't outrun a bullet. So to think that I volunteered for the job was rather baffling. My District Superintendent must have caught me a weak moment.

I did survive, but if they had had many more ballots I'm not too sure it would have been the same outcome.

St Andrews UMC Cookout

We had a June cookout at St. Andrews UMC. Its always a good time of hanging out together after service and having some good food.

You've heard of open flame cooked, will Bill Wyatt is very skilled at that. Of course he's missing his eyebrows right now, but they say they'll grow back soon.

I even had to take my turn over the sweltering cooker. Oops, got caught!!

Memorial Day 2011 at Republican Grove UMC

The tradition at Republican Grove UMC is the each Memorial day and Veteran's Day we replace the flags on the graves of our veteran's.

The old flags are gathered together with respect and taken where they can be disposed of properly.

It was a very special day and I have been honored to participate.

Even the youngest learn of the sacirifice of our veterans.

We celebrated the graduations of Kelsey Adams, who graduated from Gretna High School and is headed to James Madison University, and the graduation of Wesley Wyatt, who graduated from Virginia Tech. We're very proud of our young people at St. Andrews UMC. The year I started on the Mount Airy Charge, Wesley had graduated and was headed to Tech. May God bless them as they continue through life.

St Andrews UMC Yard Sale

St. Andrews UMC had a yard sale. It served two purposes; to raise some finances for the church and to make the church visible to the community.

We sold hot dogs and drinks, along with baked goods. A.J. Nuckols cooked the hotdogs. We had folks leaving with more hot dogs than yard sale items.

We had everything from tools to toys.

We had homemade cakes and homemade jewelry.

It's always a good day of fellowship, when you're with good friends.

Crimson Clover

One of the most amazing sights for me is the Crimson Clover. It turns the fields red and is a wondrous sight in the Spring.

Last year it appeared right on Pentecost Sunday. This year it was a bit later, but it always reminds me of tongues of fire.

I love being able to witness God's artistry.

A Day at the Magic Kingdom

Our celebration begins at the Magic Kingdom front gates and the Seven Seas Lagoon. The character train welcome and “Move It! Shake It! Celebrate It!” are also featured.

Also, we captured some amazing images of our attractions and the “SpectroMagic” parade on one of the days it was running on Main Street, U.S.A.

Visiting The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in December

We hadn't been to Universal Studios in Orlando since 1994. We make a yearly trek to Walt Disney World, but have not had the desire to go to Universal again, until now. Now The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is part of the Islands of Adventure park. It is the only thing I can think of that would have gotten me back into Universal. Unless they come up with a Lord of the Rings section, but I digress.

When you walk through the entrance below, you are greeted by the scene above. The Hogwarts Express on you right, with all the hissing and steam you need, and the street of Hogsmeade before you. If you've read the books and watched the movies, it will take your breath away. Joanne had to keep grabbing me, because I was walking around like a dazed kid. She was afraid that I would walk into someone or a wall.

The engine of the Hogwarts Express is lovely in deatail. I was going to take a picture of Joanne in front of the engine, but she kept motioning for me to get in the picture, too. I said, "I can't, I'm taking the picture." She said, in her aggravated voice, "Not you, Him!" I looked to my side and there was the Conductor of the Hogwarts Express, looking very sheepish and questioningly asking, "Me?" Joanne nodded with a grin and he hustled over to get in the shot.

At the Owl Post you can mail letters or postcards and get them postmarked from Hogsmeade. Honeydukes is the store with all the candies; chocolate frogs and cauldrons, sweets and sours, and every flavored beans.

This is the back of Hogsmeade, its not just a bunch of store fronts, the whole thing is done right.

The Hogwarts Castle is an incredible sight. It appears massive and is so accurate to the movie.

Joanne and I took the walking tour through the castle. We walked through scenes from the movie. When we finished the tour, Joanne went back outside and waited for me while I did the Forbidden Journey ride.

The hog's head actually grunts and snorts.

Unfortunately, the shrunken heads don't talk. I think their stitches are too tight.

Joanne and I slipped up to the bar for a butterbeer. We think its a mix of cream soda, butterscotch, and whipped cream. Its a tad sweet, but we wanted to be able to say we had one.

The Three Broomsticks restaurant where we had lunch. Nothing particularly fancy about it, but it was a nice place to take a sit down. We sat at a table with a couple from Great Britain and had a great conversation.

We were invited to be guest singers with the Hogwarts' Choir. Joanne was readily accepted into the choir. Unfortunately, I was relegated to "Toad Status".

Notice how we stood with the sides that we were color coordinated with; I stood with the ladies from Beauxbatons and Joanne stood with the gentlemen from Durmstrang.

Finally we have Joanne with the moving wanted poster of Sirius Black. It was a great day and I'd go back in a heart beat. The whole thing was extremely well done.

When Joanne and I arrived at Epcot the first and foremost place we had planned to head to was where you get your pictures taken with the characters.

Joanne had to get her very own, up close, by herself, personal picture with Mickey. But, I was standing close by to make sure she behaved.

You might notice that I didn't get my very own,up close, personal, by myself photo with Minnie. I was told that people were waiting in line behind us and there wasn't time for that. Aha, I think I see a problem here.

This was the "Finding Nemo" Ride at the The Sea exhibit. I call this picture "Joanne on a Half Shell".

This is the Italy Pavillion in Epcot.

We had dinner Tutto Italia Ristorante in the Italy Pavilion . It was the first time we had eaten there and it was excellent. The food and service are great, the old world atmosphere is great if you're looking to slow down a bit and catch your breath.

The real highlght of the day way going to the Candlelight Processional at the American Gardens Theatre.
The event retells the story of Christmas with a special celebrity narrator, Jodi Benson was the narrator that night, accompanied by a 50-piece orchestra and a mass choir.

Joanne and I had finished eating dinner and were just walking by as it was getting ready to begin and decided to try and get a seat. They escorted us to the front row, right in front of the sign language interpretor. They may not have been the best seats for seeing the entire choir and orchestra, but we were pleased. The sign language interpretor on our side of the stage was a show in herself and I mean that in as good of a way as can be inmagined. She didn't just use her her hands; she had the facial expressions and body movements all incorporated. I could imagine someone not being able to hear the music, watching her, and thinking, "That's what it sounds like."

There was a family seated next to us and when the narrator was reading, the mother and the children would be whispering. At first it was annoying, but I realized it was a different language. After the program, I spoke to the mother and asked her what she was doing. She told me that they were from Brazil and that her children didn't speak a word of English. So as the narrator was telling the story of the first Christmas in English, this mother was retelling the story to her children in Portugese. I was reminded of how we, as Christians, are to retell the story of Jesus.

Joanne was trying to sneak in the side door of the English Tea Shop. But, why? To get in line to have a picture with Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, too.

Father Christmas came out to the Tea Garden and told us of the Christmas traditions in the United Kingdom. That is a ball of mistletoe atop his walking stick. When we got our picture taken with him, we had an opportunity to make use of it.

This was Brunhilda, who related the Christams traditions of Germany.

Another wonderful day at Walt Disney World.

Visiting Disney Hollywood Studios in December

The first week in December, Joanne and I went to Orlando for our yearly visit to walt Disney World. Our forst park to visit was Disney's Hollywood Studios. It was probably our last warm day during our visit, but we had a great time.

We enjoyed the rides and shows. I got to ride the Rock'nRoller Coaster twice, which is one of my all time favorite rides. We also went threw the Narnia set.

We ate at our favorite restaurant in the park, the SciFi Cafe. You are seated in seats the are like a car and watch old scifi movies. The food is great, the movies are a hoot, and the atmosphere is relaxing.

When the sun went down we headed over to the Osborne Family Christmas Lights. Christmas lights cover all the building and a lot of other things. The lights blink in time with some fantastic music like Mannheim Steamroller's "Carol of the Bells".

Every fifteen minutes there is a manufatured snow storm. Actually is small soap bubbles, but it's really cool to watch.

Even bicycle props were covered in lights.

It was a great ending for our first day at the parks. Its hard to walk away and not feel in a Christmas mood, especially if you got one of those hot cups of cocoa.

2010 Thanksgiving Service at Republic Grove UMC

This past Sunday we had our comunity Thanksgiving service at Republican Grove UMC with Republican Grove Baptist Church joining us. When the Thanksginving service is held at the Baptist church, the Methodist pastor has the joy of delivering the Thanksgiving message and vice versa. So this year we at the Methodist church hosted of brethren from across the road.

We had two excellent singers for the service, from Republican Grove baptist Church we had Cecil and from Providence UMC we had Brian Daniels. Cecil sang a Martina McBride song, "I've been Blessed" and Brian sang "Give Thanks with a Grateful Heart".

Rev. Shelton Miles, the pastor at Republican Grove Baptist Church, gave an excellent message from titled "I am Blessed". I have always enjoyed listening to Shelton. Among my many blessing here on the Mount Airy Charge, I count Shelton among the best.

Shelton was trying to explain to Joanne why she should not be taking his picture, but she wasn't listening.

2010 Charge Conference

We had our 2010 Charge Conference at Anderson Memorial UMC in Gretna. The Mount Airy Charge was three of the nine churches represented at the conference. Our group mission project for the whole group was to collect non-perishable foods for the Northern Pittsylvania County Food Bank. The food bank had a truck waiting as we were arriving, so we could drop off our things before going into the meeting.

Larry Davies, the District Superintendent of the Lynchburg District, was meeting members of the district as they arrived.

Larry has a way of telling stories to make a point. This time he called folks up to the front to make his point. It was a call for the churches to be more intentional on reaching out to those outside the church and even those who may be antagonistic to the church.

Each church or charge was asked to give a report of where their church or churches are in ministry. The following is the report I read for the three churches of the Mount Airy Charge.

We have emphasized our call to be in ministry to Jerusalem, Judea, and the uttermost parts of the earth. The three churches are and have always been very good at watching over and caring for the members of their congregations, whether they are ill, homebound, or in nursing homes. Republican Grove UMC has a tradition of delivering bags of groceries to area shut-ins during the Christmas season. Prayer time on Sunday often becomes reporting time on conditions and visits. That is their Jerusalem.

They also reach and support organizations in the community the minister to people. All three churches supported area charities such as; the Halifax and Pittsylvania County food banks, The 640 Rescue Squad, God’s Pit Crew, the Society of Saint Andrew, and Mill Stone Meals on Wheels. The congregation of Saint Andrews UMC started a “Community Help Fund”, through which they donated over $500 to area families and individuals in need. They raise funds for the help Fund by selling hot dogs and drinks at a Pumpkin Patch owned by one of the members. This is their Judea. The United Methodist Women, with only three members, supports a child in the Dominican Republic and collects item for a prison ministry. Members of all three churches came together for a Haiti Support Service. We collected two truckloads of items to deliver to “Gleaning for the World” to be sent to Haiti. They also raised $400 that was sent to long term missionaries serving in Haiti. They also supported the Lynchburg District in its effort with “Stop Hunger Now” to pack over 100,000 rice packs to be sent to Haiti. This was their work for the uttermost parts of the earth. The Mount Airy Charge has expanded its vision and its call well beyond the doors of its churches.

In our bulletin each week it starts by saying that “We’re small enough to know you and large enough to love you” and it ends by stating “You are now entering the mission field”. The churches of the Mount Airy Charge have taken both of these statements to heart and continue in service to their church, their community, and their world.

Thanks for the Thorns

I found this story in my email today. Happy Thanksgiving, in all things give thanks.

THE BLESSING OF THORNS

Sandra felt as low as the heels of her shoes as she pushed against a November gust and the florist shop door. Her life had been easy, like a spring breeze. Then in the fourth month of her second pregnancy, a minor automobile accident stole her ease.

During this Thanksgiving week she would have delivered a son. She grieved over her loss. As if that weren't enough, her husband's company threatened a transfer. Then her sister, whose annual holiday visit she coveted, called saying she could not come.

What's worse, Sandra's friend infuriated her by suggesting her grief was a God-given path to maturity that would allow her to empathize with others who suffer. "She has no idea what I'm feeling," thought Sandra with a shudder.

"Thanksgiving? Thankful for what?" she wondered aloud. For a careless driver whose truck was hardly scratched when he rear-ended her? For an airbag that saved her life but took that of her child?

"Good afternoon, can I help you?" The shop clerk's approach startled her.

"I...I need an arrangement," stammered Sandra, "for Thanksgiving?"

"Do you want beautiful but ordinary, or would you like to challenge the day with a customer favorite I call the Thanksgiving Special?" asked the shop clerk. "I'm convinced that flowers tell stories," she continued. "Are you looking for something that conveys gratitude this Thanksgiving?

"Not exactly!" Sandra blurted out. "In the last five months, everything that could go wrong has gone wrong. " Sandra regretted her outburst, and was surprised when the shop clerk said, "I have the perfect arrangement for you."

Then the door's small bell rang, and the shop clerk said, "Hi Barbara...let me get your order." She politely excused herself and walked toward a small workroom, then quickly reappeared, carrying an arrangement of greenery, bows, and long-stemmed thorny roses. Except the ends of the rose stems were neatly snipped...there were no flowers.

"Want this in a box?" asked the clerk.

Sandra watched for the customer's response. Was this a joke? Who would want rose stems with no flowers!?! She waited for laughter, but neither woman laughed.

"Yes, please." Barbara replied with an appreciative smile.

"You'd think after three years of getting the special, I wouldn't be so moved by its significance, but I can feel it right here, all over again," she said as she gently tapped her chest.

"Uh," stammered Sandra, "that lady just left with, uh... she just left with no flowers!"

"Right...I cut off the flowers. That's the Special... I call it the Thanksgiving Thorns Bouquet.

"Oh, come on, you can't tell me someone is willing to pay for that?" exclaimed Sandra.

"Barbara came into the shop three years ago feeling very much like you feel today," explained the clerk. "She thought she had very little to be thankful for. She had lost her father to cancer, the family business was failing, her son was into drugs, and she was facing major surgery."

"That same year I had lost my husband, "continued the clerk," and for the first time in my life, I had to spend the holidays alone. I had no children, no husband, no family nearby, and too great a debt to allow any travel.

"So what did you do?" asked Sandra. "I learned to be thankful for thorns," answered the clerk quietly. "I've always thanked God for good things in life and never thought to ask Him why those good things happened to me, but when bad stuff hit, did I ever ask! It took time for me to learn that dark times are important. I always enjoyed the 'flowers' of life, but it took thorns to show me the beauty of God's comfort. You know, the Bible says that God comforts us when we're afflicted, and from His consolation we learn to comfort others."

Sandra sucked in her breath as she thought about the very thing her friend had tried to tell her. "I guess the truth is I don't want comfort. I've lost a baby and I'm angry with God."

Just then someone else walked in the shop.

"Hey, Phil!" shouted the clerk to the balding, rotund man.

"My wife sent me in to get our usual Thanksgiving arrangement... twelve thorny, long-stemmed stems!" laughed Phil as the clerk handed him a tissue-wrapped arrangement from the refrigerator.

"Those are for your wife?" asked Sandra incredulously. "Do you mind me asking why she wants something that looks like that?

"No...I'm glad you asked," Phil replied. "Four years ago my wife and I nearly divorced. After forty years, we were in a real mess, but with the Lord's grace and guidance, we slogged through problem after problem. He rescued our marriage. Jenny here (the clerk) told me she kept a vase of rose stems to remind her of what she learned from "thorny" times, and that was good enough for me. I took home some of those stems. My wife and I decided to label each one for a specific "problem" and give thanks to Him for what that problem taught us."

As Phil paid the clerk, he said to Sandra, "I highly recommend the Special!"

"I don't know if I can be thankful for the thorns in my life." Sandra said to the clerk. "It's all too... fresh."

"Well," the clerk replied carefully, "my experience has shown me that thorns make roses more precious. We treasure God's providential care more during trouble than at any other time. Remember, it was a crown of thorns that Jesus wore so we might know His love. Don't resent the thorns."

Tears rolled down Sandra's cheeks. For the first time since the accident, she loosened her grip on resentment. "I'll take those twelve long-stemmed thorns, please," she managed to choke out.

"I hoped you would," said the clerk gently. "I'll have them ready in a minute."

"Thank you. What do I owe you?" asked Sandra.

"Nothing." said the clerk. "Nothing but a promise to allow God to heal your heart. The first year's arrangement is always on me." The clerk smiled and handed a card to Sandra. "I'll attach this card to your arrangement, but maybe you'd like to read it first."

It read: "Dear God, I have never thanked you for my thorns. I have thanked you a thousand times for my roses, but never once for my thorns. Teach me the glory of the cross I bear; teach me the value of my thorns. Show me that I have climbed closer to you along the path of pain. Show me that, through my tears, the colors of your rainbow look much more brilliant."

St. Andrews UMC Homecoming Sunday 2010

St. Andrews UMC had their 2010 Homecoming. We had a very nice crowd, quite a few first time visitors, along with folks that were there from some distance. We also had our members from Republican Grove UMC and Providence UMC joining us. (I'm not really sure why everyone avoids the front pews.)

We had some special music by Maria Eakin, Jason Hall, and Jacob Wyatt. I am very appreciative of their ministering in song for us.

I got to do an unplanned children's message. When I saw that we had quite a few children with us this Sunday, I couldn't resist. I got Dave Adams to grab some varied pumpkins off the tables in the fellowship hall. I had a normal orange one, a white one, and a green one. We talked about how they all looked different, but they were still pumpkins. The I related that to people and how God sent Jesus for everyone, no matter what they looked like or were shaped like. Anyways, I think it made sense to the kids.

The choir sang "God is Here", a lovely song that was just right for the day. We may have a small choir, but we have quality. They are not intimidated by their size and are a wonderful addition to the ministry of the church.

Our guest speaker was Rev. Jacob Sahms, pastor of Blanford UMC in Petersburg, Virginia. Jacob and I were in Licensing School together several years back. There is a long story about the "Wiffle Ball Miracle", but I'll have to save that for another post. While we were disappointed that his wife, Joanne, and son, Adam, couldn't join us; we were very happy to have him be able to be here with us.

Jacob brought a message titled "Got Wonder?", using the text from Luke 17:11-19. It is the passgae about Jesus healing the ten lepers and only one returned to thank him. It was an excellent sermon for us all to hear.

After the service, we all moved to the Fellowship Hall for lunch. Homecoming season is definitely not the time of year to be worrying about adding a few punds. You can always fast a few meals before Thanksgiving.

October is Pastor Appreciation Month and they surprised Joanne and me with a special cake for the both of us. They all know that there's no Pastor Charlie without Joanne. I never cease to be thankful for having been appointed to the Mount Airy Charge. I have 3 wonderful churches with the most loving congregations you could ask for, God knew what I needed.

Of course, there was a bounty of food, no one had to leave hungry. The fried chicken was great and a few pieces made their way home with us.

There were more desserts than one person could try. Not that I didn't make a valiant effort.

After lunch and fellowship, Joanne and I headed over to the White Fall Farm Pumpkin Patch for some relaxation. I simply like hanging out there, watching the little kids and families.

It was beautiful day to be outside at the Pumpkin Patch. Apparently a whole bunch of people thought the same thing.

The Hay Bale Castle sits at the top of the hill like a crown.

The two Pygmy goats and the chickens were great entertainment. The rooster kept crowing while people threw corn kernels to him. The goats would bang heads for fun, to the joy of all the little kids (and adults).

The crowd for the Pumpkin Hunt was huge. It was fun watching the kids run all over the field trying to find the mini-pumpkins hidden in the tall grass.

The Pumpkin Patch 2010

Another beautiful weekend at the White Fall Farm Pumpkin Patch of A.J. and Lisa Nuckols. You couldn't have asked for a better day. Obviously people realized that and they came out to enjoy the day in the Hay Bale Maze and Castle, Corn Maze, Pumpkin Hunt, Hay Ride, and more.

Folks were having fun with the antigue corn kernel remover, picking from a variety of pumpkins and gourds, and taking Hay Rides.

The day was cool enough and warm enough, just what you would have asked for. The sky was clear and the leaves were changing to a full range of colors.

They have pumpkins and gourds like I have never seen. I had no idea that some of these varieties even existed.

The corn maze is a lot of fun. Joanne and I went through with Tommy and Carrie Castle and their children. Even in places where it isn't too tall, you still get turned around and have to retrack. Grady loved running ahead and running back to tell us that that wasn't the way to go.

I guess you've figured out that the corn maze is actually made from sorgum, but it doesn't change how much fun it is for the smaller kids or the adults.

This is a portion the Hay Bale maze which surrounds the castle, that you have to work your way through so you can then work your way to the top of the castle.

When the sun starts setting, the fire gets lit. Its a nice time to sit back, enjoy the warmth of the fire as the evening cools down. Its a nice time for friends to sit a talk.

The White Fall Farm Pumpkin Patch in Mount Airy

It's time for the White Fall Farm Pumpkin Hunt of A.J. and Lisa Nuckols in Mount Airy, Virginia. The Pumpkin Patch is 10 miles east of Gretna on route 40 and then 1/4 mile south on route 640. If you want to plug it into your GPS use this: 6001 Riceville Road, Gretna, Virginia, 24557.

The hay bale castle is a whole new design this year with a hay bale maze around the outside, that you have to find your way through before you can get up into the second and third levels of the castle. But the view from the top is worth the effort. It took me several tries to find the correct way through the maze, but I do tend to be a bit directionally challenged.

The view to the front of the castle is great, looking back at the picnic area on the left and the corn maze on the right, and the view from the back of the castle is acres of bright orange pumpkins. They also have white pumpkins and gourds of varieties that I have never seen before.

They have farm animals for the kids to see, petting not recommended. Their is the mobile chicken coup, with a rooster who never heard that crowing was supposed to be done only when the sun comes up. There is Stu the pig, Tessie the goat, and two Angus calves #53 and #14.

They have tractor pulled hay rides, that take folks all over the area. Its also used to take people out in the field to pick a pumpkin. Which is a really good idea since some of those pumpkins are huge.

Joanne, Jean Shelton, and I manned the St. Andrews United Methodist Church Hot Dog Stand. The proceeds from the sales go to the church's "Community Help Fund". Last year the church assited several families in the area with groceries, elctric bills, and other personal needs. All the people that were helped were not members of the church. We are really excited about this opportunity to reach out beyond the walls of our church and to be the hands of Christ to others.

You'll notice in the above picture that when it was slow between lunch and suppertime, Joanne got on the computer and checked her Facebook. Okay, I checked mine too.

There were organized Tug-o-Wars throughout the day. There is also a small hay bale maze for the little kids. The corn maze for the adventurous. Don't plan on coming and spending a few minutes, think about staying for the afternoon and evening.

There was also pumpkin painting for the kids. Some of the kids were minimalists and some were way over the top, with barely any space not painted. They had volunteered Joanne to judge the art works, but in the end did the wise and safe thing, rewarding all the kids for their efforts.

It was an abolutely georgous day in the country. The forecast was for chilly temperatures, but it warmed up nicely with barely a cloud in the sky.

This is A.J. Nuckols, the owner and designer of the Pumpkin Patch, carrying the American flag out to plant at the top of the castle. I have to admit, that as I watched him placing it on the upper hay bale, I had chills.

In the evening we had a Blue Grass music played. Some very talented musicians got together to entertain folks at the Pumpkin Patch. There is music scheduled every Saturday through the month of October.

As the sun goes down, the sun peaks through the tree and the fire is lit. We had hoped to roasting marshmallows, but that will have to wait for another week, when we remember to bring them

When the sun went down, the outline of the castle was on the horizon.

It was a really nice, nice weather and good firends. I tell folks that this is my Walt Disney World in Pittsylvania County. I look forward to this every year andtry to visit as often as I can while its going, because then I have to wait another year to do it again. If you get a chance come on out and experience it for yourself.

Republican Grove Homecoming 2010

On 26 September Republican Grove UMC celebrated their 2010 Homecoming. It was a beautiful with the temperature in the 70's with a nice breeze coming in the windows. We were happy to have so many form Providence UMC and St. Andrews UMC join with Republican Grove on this special day.

We had quite a few children with us that day, joining Cortney Dawson. I think she was curious about these new people that were her size. I got to take adavantage of the day a do the children's message. I know you're wondering who helped me up off the floor. I'm not telling.

Brian Daniels, from Providence UMC, joined us and sang Amazing Grace. We very much appreciate Brian being willing to share his talent with us.

Joanne played piano for Homecoming and accompanied Brian for his solo.

Rev. Earl Long from Vertical Kids Ministry was our guest speaker for this year's Homecoming. Earl brought us an excellent message and incorporated some of his gospel illusions into the sermon. Everyone enjoyed the word and the object lessons.

Earl took an obviously empty paper bag and kept pulling things out of it, to demonstrate how receiving gifts often takes faith. He then took a box with J.O.Y. written on the outside and placed inside the box a black scarf, representing Sin, and next a red scarf, representing the Blood of Jesus. He then unfolded the box, laying it flat on the table, and only a white scarf was inside. Demonstrating that the Blood of Jesus removes the dark stain of Sin and leaves us white as snow.

The only problem is that I have to preach next week after this. I think maybe I had better learn to juggle. Well, maybe I had better make sure my health insurance will cover juggling injuries first.

After the service and a blessing by Rev. Sam Caldwell, we heading downstairs for a wonderful lunch. There were foods and desserts in abundance. It was nice to sit and talk with friends and family. I think the pictures are better than any words regarding our meal and fellowship.

It was a great day. Word and Worship, Food and Fellowship.

Zambia Benefit Concert in Gretna, Virginia

In July, the youth group from Cornerstone Church of Christ went to a Christian youth conference at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee called Christ In Youth: Move (CIY). While there, their attention was brought to the water crisis in Zambia, Africa.

An organization called Active Water is working to bring safe drinking water to the families of Zambia by building each family a sand filter. The sand filters cost $75 each. CIY partnered with Active Water this year to produce and film a short movie about this crisis, called Zambia’s Song.

In about two months, youth from Gretna, Virginia visioned, organized, directed, produced, and performed in a benefit concert to help Active Water bring clean drinking water to the people of Zambia. The proceeds will be going to provide sand filters for homes and schools to make the water drinkable in Zambia.

Dan Nuckols went with me one Sunday and shared about the project at all 3 churches of the Mount Airy Charge. Members of the 3 congregations contributed funds to provide 4 sand filters.

2010 Homecoming at Providence UMC

Homecoming Sunday at Providence UMC was September 12th and it was a great time to catch up with friends and family.

We had a good crowd come for Homecoming. We were happy to see so many old friends, while we remembered those who were no longer with us. Members from Republican Grove UMC and St. Andrews UMC joined Providence UMC in celebrating their Homecoming Sunday.

Brian Daniels, accompanied by Joanne Johnson, sang two special songs for us.

Our guest speaker was Rev. George Schaefer. George is the pastor of the Payneton-Siloam Charge and an good friend of mine. He brought an excellent message asking whether we were simply "Committed or a Bondservant".

Of course, no Homecoming is complete without a grand meal following the service.

This was the first Homecoming at Providence UMC to use the new Fellowship Hall. It is a fine facility and met our needs perfectly.

There was an abundance of desserts. The only problem was that I was limited by human capacity on how many I could try. But I did manage to sample the cherry cobbler, eclair cake, banana pudding, pecan pie, and one other that tasted great but I didn't ask what it was. It is a good thing I such self control. ;-)

The weather could not have been better, not too hot and with a good breeze. We simply opened the windows in the Fellowship Hall and used the ceiling fans. It was pleasant enough for many to eat outside under the canopies.

Homecoming is a special day; a day to enjoy worshiping together, fellowship over lunch, rekindling friendships, and remembering those who have gone before us.

Baptism at St. Andrews UMC

There was a baptism at St. Andrews UMC. Our special guest was Sophia Ann Margaret DeRouchie. She and her parents, Sherri Ann Adams DeRouchie and Andre Romeo DeRouchie, along with her brothers, came all the way from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada to celebrate and share this day with us.

During her childhood, Sherri, Sophia's mom, spent many summer days with her grandmother, Gladys Adams. Gladys was member of St. Andrews UMC and Sherri would join her grandmother at church on Sunday. She said that she wanted her daughter baptized where she had so many wonderful memories.

At St. Andrews UMC we had an after-church Sunday cookout for the young people at the church who were heading back to High School and College.

Bill Wyatt took on the job of grilling the hamburgers and hotdogs. Watching Bill cook and sweat turned into a spectator sport for a while. It wasn't one of the cooler days of the summer to start with and that grill was hot.

Most of the ladies and young people had the good sense to get in out of the heat, while the cooking was going on outside. The ladies got the fruits, salads, chips, and condiments all laid out.

Since it was a day for the students, they got to go through the line first. That decision had the potential for a major food disater. But, we had plenty for everyone.

It was a good day of food and fellowship. Two things that are almost obligatory to any United Methodist get together. We will miss our college kids heading away and hope they visit frequently. We're very glad that we still a our High School kids and appreciate our years with them before they head off to college. All in all, we want them to remember that they are an important part of the church and they are always welcome.

Dan Shares About Youth Conference

Dan Nuckols from St. Andrews UMC went ot a Youth Conference. Whwn he returned he shared the following with the congregation about the experience and what he and his friends were led to do.

Recently the youth group from Cornerstone Church of Christ went to a Christian youth conference at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee called Christ In Youth: Move (CIY). While there, our attention was brought to the water crisis in Zambia, Africa.

An organization called Active Water is working to bring safe drinking water to the families of Zambia by building each family a sand filter. The sand filters cost $75 each. CIY par...tnered with Active Water this year to produce and film a short movie about this crisis, called Zambia’s Song.

On September 26, 2010 at 7 p.m. we will be hosting a benefit at the Gretna Theatre to raise money to buy sand filters. Local artists will come out and perform, and we will also show the film Zambia’s Song that runs for about 20 minutes. Please come and support our mission to help the people of Zambia, Africa.

First Visit to White Fall

Yesterday A.J. and Lisa Nuckols took Joanne and me to visit White Fall on the Banister River for the first time. I really don't know what I was expecting, but it exceeded what that was. It is a beautiful rustic section of the river, where you can imagine it looked just like it does now hundreds of years ago.

There are a series of step falls progressing down the river, with a swimming hole that is deep enough to dive into. The river bottom is all rock, even where there is sand it is only maybe 6 inches deep before you get to rock.

All you hear are the birds and the water rushing by. There quite a few people swimming, with the temperature hitting 102 it was the perfect day for it. The river water felt almost like warm bath water. Next time we come, the bathing suit is coming with me.

Joanne and Lisa sat on the rock talking, while Joanne soaked her feet in the water.

There is an old mill there with the remains of stone walls. At one time, along with the grain mill, there was a saw mill and a blacksmith shop in this area, too.

I'm sure this won't be our last visit to White Fall. I only regret I waited this long.

Baptism at the Beach

My brother-in-law, Dan Kohrt, and his daughter Mariah wanted to be baptized while we were in Myrtle Beach for our family reunion. The time and day were set and the clan gathered. Joanne, Cathy Johnson, Randy and Dawna Lewis came down to the beach from the condo.

Aaron Johnson, Jeremiah, Taisie, and Levi were called out of the water.

Mariah Kohrt went into the water to get Bailey Johnson and Micah Kohrt.

Lila was excited just to get to play in the sand. Everyone else waited and looked for shells.

My son-in-law, Dave Harrington, is a pastor of a church just outside of Albany NY. He and I officiated the baptism. It was a good thing there were two of us, because I don't think I could have gotten Dan back out of the water by myself.

A Really Good Day at the Beach.

A Visit to Broadway at the Beach, Myrtle Beach SC

One night we decided to venture out to Broadway at the Beach. It is a large area with shops and restaurants built around a lake/lagoon. It turned out to be a very crowded night to visit and so we all had to park in different areas. By the time we all found each other, the evening was almost over. We had a good time just being out together.

They had folks dressed up in costume, so we had to get pictures with them. Actually it took some convincing to get some in the line.

Where we were at Myrtle Beach, we decided to take our kids out to eat. Thomas, Taisie, and Levi wanted to stay and hang out with their cousins. We went to the House of Blues. We took pictures of each other with some of the art they have all over the place. Jeremiah and I stood in front of the "Unity in Diversity" work. I assumed it had to do with beard lengths.

We are at a family reunion in Myrtle Beach. My mom turned 80 last December and we decided it was time to get the clan together. We have my mom and dad here, along with their 5 children and 4 spouses, 8 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. I've been looking forward to this for quite awhile.

Prayer meeting at St. Andrews UMC

We had a board meeting at St. Andrews UMC and it was proposed that we start a weekly prayer meeting. Now, the idea was not mine, it was theirs, and it was unanimously approved. For a pastor it doesn't get much better than that. I know that as a United Methodist pastor, eventually, I will most likely be moved. But, when it is their idea, they have ownership. It idea doesn't walk out the door when I have to move to another congregation.

We had our first prayer meeting this past Tuesday night. We had 6 people joining together and that includes me. Now that may seem like a small number to some, but with a church that has a small congregation, that number represents 10 to 20% of the active congregation. Personally, I am very pleased with the response. We spent an hour praying for world issues and needs, our nation, our state, our community, our church, and individuals.

For Father's Day Joanne gave me a scale replica of Shields Tavern in Colonial Williamsburg.We have had more anniversary dinners at Shields tavern than anywhere else.

We had dinner at Mom and Dad's. We had a nice time talking with my sisters Dawna and Paula. It was fun using Skype to not only talk to them but to see them on the computer. I am going to have to get that hooked up on mine.

We found a book about oysters for Dad.The book talks about the various oysters up and down the east coast. Since Dad loves his oysters, I figured he was the only person I could think of that might actually read the book and enjoy it.

The Newlyweds at St. Andrews UMC for Their First Sunday

Josh and Kate Dalton came to church the morning after they were married. Our benediction that morning was to have them come up to the front of the sanctuary for the entire congregation to gather around, place their hands on them, and pray that God would bless their marriage and life together.

When the "Amen" was said, we pulled out the bubble juice and blew bubbles, just like we did when they left the reception. Everyone was laughing and celebrating.

A wonderful way to start a life together, in God's house, with God's people, blowing bubbles, and laughing.

Father's Day on the Mount Airy Charge

On the Mount Airy Charge we recognize all men on Father's Day, regardless of age or whether they have had children or not.

We want all of our men to recognize that though they may not have had children, they may minister as "Spiritual Fathers" or surrogate fathers depending on the situation.

Joanne made up a little gift with lifesavers for each of the men in our 3 churches.

Even the pastor gets a Father's Day surprise.

The Wedding of Joashua and Kate Dalton

Here comes the Bride! Joshua and Kate Dalton were married Saturday June 19th at Straightstone Baptist Church in Pittsylvania County. I co-officiated with Pastor Paul Woodward of Straightstone Baptist Church. He did the opening half of the service and I picked it up with the vows. The transition was during a special song.

It was a beautiful service and went off with barely a glitch. I was going to serve the couple Communion and then there was to be a song, and then they would do the Unity Sand. The singer started before we had a chance to begin the Communion. I looked at Kate and Josh and told them no problem. When the song was finished I served Communion, then they moved directly to do the Unity Sand. It went seamlessly.

Joanne and I got back from Williamsburg on Friday evening, just in time to change clothes, into something better than our traveling duds, and make it to the wedding rehearsal for Josh Dalton and Katie Nuckols.

I like rehearsals, mainly because everyone is a bit more relaxed and plays around.

The wedding will be at Straightstone Baptist Church and I will be co-officiating with their pastor, Paul Woodward.

The rehearsal went fine, but even when they're total chaos the wedding seems to come off beautiful. Personally, I think its another one of those God things. After the rehearsal we had diner in the church fellowship hall.

Tomorrow's a big day.

Anniversary Trip to Colonial Wiiliamsburg

The day after the Virginia United Methodist Annual Conference ended, Joanne and I went to Colonial Williamsburg for the day. Actually we made it until 1 PM, by then the temperature was 95 degrees and Joanne was turning beet red. So we didn't make a whole day, but we didn't get heat stroke either.

If you haven't been to Colonial Williamsburg recently, expect some entertaining changes. They have always had reenactors, but now its a production, with performances in the streets and on stages. You can follow the story from one place to the next and it is thoroughly involving.

The story we saw was about the Stamp Act Tax and Governor Dunsmore having removed the gunpowder and muskets from the magazine under the cover of night. It told the story of how these actions effected the population of colonial Williamsburg, from affluent and influential to the common folk and slaves.

Now, we could simply go and just hang out in the gardens at Colonial Williamsburg. The pace is slow and comfortable, especially when its a bit cooler.

One of the newest things in Colonial Williamsburg is the Coffee House. It is the building closest to the Capitol. They have a tour through the building explaining its function and use. The tour finished with everyone being served hot tea, coffee, or chocolate. We were advised that good colonialist we would avoid the tea, because of the tax. Joanne and I tried the chocolate, which tasted as if you had melted a dark chocolate bar and poured it in the cup. We added some cream to the cup and it wasn't quite as strong.

Thursday evening, we ate ate shields Tavern, for our anniversary; a week late, but worth the wait. Of all the taverns you can dine at in Colonial Williamsburg, Shields has been our consistent favorite. There was a man playing bagpipes outside as we waiting. I think if he had played inside there might have been a small riot. During dinner we were entertained by guitar, fiddle, and a horn that looked like it came from the imagination of Dr. Seuss. When we finished our meal we were the last ones in our room and most of the tavern.

Even with the heat, it was a great day. Though I think next time we visit, it will be in the Fall of the year.

2010 Virginia United Methodist Annual Confeence

The Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church was held in Norfolk VA this year. We met in the Norfolk Scope, a large convention center/arena, starting Sunday June 13th through Wednesday the 16th. The first night Communion was served to all those in attendance. No small logistical task.

Annual Conference is the time when we have the Ordering of Ministry service, where all the new pastors are licensed and ordained. They all march in together, then the various groupings go up on the platform. There was large group this year; 19 ordained as Elders and 38 licensed as local pastors.

There were are variety of speakers. One was Jim Gulley (lower left hand corner in photo above), who was in Haiti and trapped in the collapsed Montana Hotel for 58 hours. He was in Haiti as part of a three-member team from the General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM) on a quest to improve medical services and agricultural practices in Haiti. The other two were the Rev. Sam Dixon, head of UMCOR, The United Methodist Committee on Relief, and the Rev. Clint Rabb, who led the Volunteers In Mission area. Dixon and Rabb did not survive the ordeal. His story and his call for continued involvement in Haiti was a highlight of the conference for me.

Joanne and I sat with George and Kathy Schaeffer up in the nosebleed section. We tried sitting down front and center, but there were too many folks having their own conversations for us to hear what was going on. There were quite a few resolutions that were brought before the conference and voted on; we wanted to hear the discussion.

There were several resolutions we were very interested in; "A Call to Prayer and Ministry for Military Families", "Coping with Crime", and "Tobacco Policy in Virginia". Some were simply recommendations for the denominational position to be presented to the state legislature. The discussion was interesting, but usually cut short, unfortunately not everyone gets to speak.

On Tuesday evening, during the dinner break, The Lynchburg District pastors and representatives met at a local mall to have dinner together. We did this last year and it helps to meet other pastors and people from the Lynchburg District that you may not know or even see often.

Now this is Joanne's greatest fear, me loose in the bookstore. I'll go wandering off looking at books and every time Joanne sees me she'll ask, "What do you have in your hands now?" Overall I behaved well and didn't come home with too many. Joanne is the rational part of my brain, in person, when I'm in a bookstore.

All in all it was a good conference. A little too much "political correctness" for my taste, but I made it through. Sometimes it seems more like we're running a business than a church. But, I got to see friends I don't get to see very often and that's a good thing. I got to see the diversity of our denomination working together and that's a good thing. I heard about the variety of missions and ministries of the United Methodist Church and that's a good thing. I came away more positive than negative and that's a good thing. I left ready to get back to my churches and ministry; and that's a God thing.

39th Wedding Anniversary

Joanne and I celebrated our 39th wedding anniversary on June the 11th. We got married just two days after Joanne had graduated High School. I, being so much older, had graduated the year before. We might have been young and dumb, but we were also stubborn in love.

We still have them stored, Joanne wants to make pillows out of the material. I'm thinking that I might lose these extra 60 pounds and fit back in them for our 40th anniversary. Please, stop laughing.

The Wedding of Travis and Anna Thacker

Jeremiah called and asked if I would do a wedding for his friends Anna and Travis. They wanted to get married on the Blue Ridge Parkway at an overlook called Thunder Ridge. It was also the location that he had proposed to her. It is a beautiful site, overlooking the valley and mountains below.

The weather could not have been better, It was in the low 80's with a ten mph breeze, just enough to keep the bugs away.

It was a simple, yet beautiful service. Travis held their 2 week old baby, Ember Rose, during the service, while Anna held a bouquet of Day Lilies.

Joanne took the pictures which wasn't an easy job. The balcony was four steps up and she was facing into the setting sun.

"You may kiss your bride" is one of my favorite things to say at a wedding.

Memorial Day 2010 at Republican Grove UMC

Joanne and I were were in New York visiting our grandchildren over Memorial Day weekend. While we were gone, Republican Grove UMC continued their Memorial Day tradition.

After the morning service the members of Republican Grove UMC go to the church cemetery and place an American flag at the grave of each member who served in the military.

The flags that were placed on the graves the previous year for Memorial Day are gathered. The old flags are then taken to the National Gaurd unit for proper disposal. There is a ceremony that is conducted before the flags are destroyed. It is a ceremony that shows respect and honor to the flags.

It is a moment that will bring tears to your eyes as the church remembers those who served to assure them the freedom to gather and worship in peace and freedom.

Brandon Wyatt Graduation Cookout

Sunday evening we went to a cookout to celebrate the graduation of Brandon Wyatt from High School. Brandon will be attending Virginia Tech this Fall, joining his brother, Wesley.

There was an abundance of food, family, and friends.

It took a little work, but they actually got Thomas playing games and hanging out with the teenagers.

We had a short rain and then an incredible rainbow. It was one of the few times I've ever been able to see the entire arc of the rainbow.

We had a good time and very much appreciate being included in the celebration.

Lester Family Reunion

Sunday, June 6th, was the Lester Family Reunion held at Providence UMC. Joanne, Thomas, and I were invited to join them. It was held in Providence UMC's new fellowship hall. It was really nice to be able to gather in an air conditioned facility, especially since the temperature was in the 90's outside.

There was plenty of food to go around. Just a few high points for me were the fried chicken, country ham biscuits, Doris' apples, broccoli salad, baked beans, deviled eggs, and others. Thomas, who has an excellent appetite, did not leave hungry. There were a number of desserts, even Ann's cherry cobbler, though she didn't climb the tree for these.

The meal was also a celebration of Brian Daniels graduation from High School. Brian will be going to Averett University next year and has already received several scholarships.

Thomas, our grandson, had come back to Virginia with us when we came home from our Memorial Day weekend trip to New York state. We had gone out to eat, gone to the movies, played the Wii, watched the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, spent time with his great-grandparents, and laughed a lot. Today was his torment day, he had to listen to me preach the same sermon three times at three churches, and attend a reunion and graduation cookout where he didn't know anyone. For all his stature, he is painfully shy.

Thomas had two clear plastic spoons that he kept placing over his eyes. It would make Joanne and me look distorted and he would just sit there and laugh at us. Its hard sometimes for me to remember that this 1/2 inch short of six feet tall kid is only twelve years old. He's a lot of fun to have around.

He may not know anyone, but I guess as long as he can pick at his grandparents the time is not a total loss. Thank-you to the Lester family for allowing us to join them.

Preaching at Full Gospel Tabernacle

While Joanne and I were in New York, Dave asked if I would like to preach at Full Gospel Tabernacle, the church where davve is the pastor. In addition to the sermon, I took advantage of the opportunity to share (brag) about the three churches of the Mt. Airy Charge. Using their projection system, I showed pictures of the churches, their stained glass windows, the various ministries of the churches, and some of my favorite pictures of the country beauty.

These are our grandchildren, Lila, Taisie, Thomas, and Levi.

The members of Dave's church were very welcoming and gracious to a visiting United Methodist pastor.
